It bothers me that I can’t remember how many times I’ve been to SF. And since I’m depressed, like plastic-bag-floating-in-the-wind-depressed, I will try to write it all down now b/c most of my SF trips have been great. None of this will be interesting to anyone else but me so scroll on if you wish. The best way I can remember my trips to SF is by trying to recall the places I’ve stayed at. This is mostly in order, I think.
1. The Alison Hotel, Spring Break 2001 (which is now called something else but probably still equally as dingy, sketchy and mildly haunted). YEAH, CABO! This was my first trip to SF as a senior in college and it ended pretty badly b/c one friend decided to opt out of most activities b/c it “cost money” to do/get in. She thought things were free in SF, apparently. We got lost a lot (no iPhones then, I’m old) and walked into the Tenderloin by accident.
2. Miyako Hotel. This was when Mylani still lived in Orange County and she drove up to meet me and brought a box of Donut Man donuts w/her (lived up to the hype). I had In n Out for the first time (also worth the hype) and learned what a “John” was b/c we saw one in our hotel lobby.
3 & 4. Ex-friend’s apt in the Inner Richmond. I think I stayed w/her twice before. We no longer talk for various reasons but I surely miss her awesome apt. It was/is the best apt I’ve seen in SF.
5. Mylani’s place in Oakland. Mylani escaped southern CA hell and moved up to Oakland in this cute loft where I met her awesome dog, Mingus (RIP), and her then fiance (now life partner) Quinn.
6. This one might not count b/c I was in SF for one meal. It was my birthday and I was stuck in Sunnyvale (2 hrs south of SF) for training with NotGoogle.com. About 2 days into training I realized I wasn’t going to like that job at all but I was stuck b/c I had already quit my old job. I was majorly bumming but I met Alex through another friend and he drove me 2 hrs to SF for my bday meal and 2 hrs back to Sunnyvale. What a champ!
7. Alex’s apt in the Castro. On my first day there I saw a naked dude strolling through the Castro and all he had on were socks and sneakers. I like that he took the time to put on some socks. I had awesome pumpkin curry and I dragged Alex to SF MoMA where he actually had a good time. He is now a more cultured person thanks to me. We also went to the Academy of Sciences which is CRAZY fantastic.
8. Alex’s apt in South SF. This one I barely remember, I don’t know why. I just remember Alex’s toilet had doodoo flecks and I was like geez, you knew I was coming! Maybe that’s why though.
9. Prescott Hotel 2010. I stayed in a hotel by myself b/c I ran out of friends to scrounge off of. Alex moved to Sunnyvale and Mal was in South SF temporarily so like a grown up I booked this place through Travel Zoo and it was pretty darn nice for the price. We went to see Surfer Blood, ha ha ha. OH also, Mylani drove over from Pinole and we went to the de Young and I snorted out loud b/c we were uh, doing a recreational activity.
10. Mal’s apt in the Sunset 2010. I went twice in 2010. This 2nd time was for Treasure Island. I had Tartine for the first time and it was even better than I expected and I didn’t even eat their chocolate croissant which is what they’re known for.
I know I am missing a trip but I can’t remember it right now. I’d still like to live in SF someday but I’m currently a wallowing hobo.
